A laptop with a DIY HDD cage carrying 4 HDDs.

I have an old Acer Aspire A515-51G and I also have a desire to have a home server. In combination this creates a need for the laptop to carry more HDDs than it can from factory. Usually it can take one M.2 SSD and one 2.5” SATA drive.

I currently use Borg for all my backups. To have a remote backup I placed my old Synology NAS at a family member and connected it to tailscale (via a tailscale docker container). That way I could also can do Borg backups to that remote NAS.

We want a new door bell and we will even be able to run new wires (currently we only have 2 Wires). I would like to have video and 2 way audio locally hosted, though the most important thing is, that the base functionality (door bell button with connected wireless door chimes through the house) needs to be absolutely reliable (no random connectivity issues).

Kind and cherished FOSS and computing freedom advocate @sleepyowl (Joyce Ng) has gone missing and there is reason to fear she may have been apprehended by authorities, possibly likely even for being framed. Nobody has been able to reach her and many of us are worried for her safety.Joyce does work on verifiable open source hardware. She also has been an activist pushing against the rise of far-right Christian nationalism globally but especially in Singapore. Because of this and her identity, she has people who would like to see bad things happen to her.Probably for this reason, she may have been misidentified by Five Eyes as being a threat actor. I have never had a LinkedIn account, both out of general anti-data-vacuuming-social-media, and specifically anti-whatever-the-fucking-corphead-psychos-are-doing-on-LinkedIn tendencies, and managed to find a decent job out of uni just fine (software field). I’m now looking for a job again and the number one piece of advice I’m being given by concerned parties is “get on LinkedIn”.

Set up a framework to fully man-in-the-middle my own browsers’ networking and see what they’re up to beyond just looking at their DNS queries and encrypted tcp packets. We force the browser to trust our mitmproxy cacert so we can peek inside cleartext traffic and made it conveniently reproducible and extensible.

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across this little device: https://www.waveshare.com/sim7600g-h-4g-dongle.htm. According to its documentation, it is able to write SMS, provide mobile internet, and allow making phone calls (which is quite rare). Does anyone have any experience with this device? And if yes, does it just work with Linux applications like gnome-calls (I know that this issue https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/calls/-/issues/680 exists, but it is basically inactive)?
